Your weekly source for the latest stem cell research and stem cell patents.

Hello ,

Last week an interesting patent was issued, #7,482,332, covering a type of nano-circle DNA construct that may be administered to cells to prevent telomere shortening and presumably senescence.  The inventors are proposing this to be an alternative to having to physicially transfect with the hTERT gene.

Other patents issued last week include #7,482,025, which covers methods of using decellularized liver for assisting tissue regrowth, as well as # 7,483,749 covering use of electrical pulses to stimulate cardiac regeneration.

In the news, our friends who are dentists will enjoy hearing that periodontal ligament derived mesenchymal stem cells, as well as gingival fibroblasts, have immune modulatory activities similar to bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, mediated through TGF-beta, HGF, and induction of IDO activity.

Additionally, for those of you who missed the announcement we made earlier in the week, the company International Stem Cell (ISCO) is making progress in using parthenogenic derived stem cells for growing of corneal tissue.

As a last note, we would like to wish a very happy birthday to Eli Sercarz, one of the most inspiring immunologists and human beings.

Telomere-encoding synthetic DNA nanocircles, and their use for the elongation of telomere repeats

Patent Number: 7,482,332

Telomeres are repeats of the TTAGGG sequence on the ends of chromosomes that progressively get shorter with each cell division, causing eventual cell senescence.  The enzyme telomerase is important in cells that need to proliferate longer, for example memory T cells, or stem cells.  It is a dream of many to...[Read More]

Periodontal Ligament Mesenchymals are Immune Suppressive

Sunday February 1st, 2009 @ 17:42:33 EST

Mesenchymal stem cells, or cells resembling these cells, have been found in a variety of different tissues in addition to the bone marrow.  These include, fat, menstrual blood and teeth.  One interesting question is how these cells differ from each...[Read More]
