It is known that hedgehog proteins are involved in pattern specification during embryogenesis. The possibility of modulating the hedgehog signalling pathway for regulation of stem cell activity was previously patented for hematopoietic stem cells, neural stem cells and pancreatic stem cells.
In the current patent, the use of hedgehog proteins are covered for induction of mesenchymal cell growth and spreading on three dimensional scaffolds. This patent is very useful for growing artificial organs ranging from heart valves to bladders.
