There is currently great interest in the use of cord blood stem cells for neuroregenerative purposes. This patent covers the ex vivo growth of cord blood cells in EGF, FGF2, NGF, and retinoic acid in order to generate a population of cells that contain neuronal-like properties.
Evidence of activity of these neural precursors is provided in the examples section which describes post-CNS injury recovery being accelerated in animals treated with human cord blood generated progenitors.
