This patent covers the use of spheroid hepatocytes and hepatocyte progenitors in liquid culture, in such a manner that they may function as a bioartificial liver.
Specifically, the patent teaches that previous artificial liver approaches had certain limitations that did not allow maximal growth and function of hepatocytes ex vivo. The current invention provides various medical device structures, culture conditions, and perfusion speeds.
