This patent is an example of how a good patent strategy is executed. WARF has filed originally patents on the actual embryonic stem cells and their composition of matter. One of the best ways of differentiating cells from embryonic stem cells involves growing the embryonic stem cells as embryoid bodies, then subsequently digesting the embryoid body and collecting the cells you need. Optionally, one can add various agents to the embryoid body so as to stimulate differentiation in one way or another. This is exactly what the patent covers.
