This patent covers the use of medium obtained from the supernatant of cultured hippocampal neurons for use in the induction of neural differentiation of stem cells.
The stem cells that can be differentiated into neurons by culture in the media include:
- Embryonic stem cells
- Embryonic germ cells
- Embryonic carcinoma
- Bone marrow stromal cells

So if someone was the identify the "active ingredient" in the hippocample supernatant there would be another patent right there. Unfortunately this is like herbal medicine. There are so many different chemicals and factors and proteins in the supernatant mixture and you propably need all of them in order to actually have the biological effect.
I am so happy that we have proteomics and bioinformatics now so that we can figure all this stuff out. Only 30,000 genes.
