This patent covers new types of media useful for expansion of embryonic stem cells in absence of feeder cells or supernatant of other cells (conditioned media). The patent essentially covers the use of various concentrations of albumin, minerals, vitamins, amino acids, glucose, a fibroblast growth factor, gamma amino butyric acid, pipecholic acid, lithium, lipids, a transferrin or a transferrin substitute and insulin or an insulin substitute for expansion of the embryonic stem cells without induction of differentiation.
Previous approaches for expanding embryonic stem cells include the use of human feeder cells, or various concentrations of fibroblast growth factors.
