Chemotherapy has cancer has numerous side effects. Most of the patents relating to protection of side effects of chemotherapy relate to protecting the hematopoietic stem cells. Other patents cover means of protecting hair follicle stem cells. The current patent covers means of protecting muscles from the effects of chemotherapy.
The current patent covers the use of aplidine in conjunction with L-carnitine for protection of muscles. The patent recites several concentrations of the two agents which have demonstrated activity. The examples section of the patent also describes a Phase I study using the drug.
Aplidine is a compound found in some strange sea creatures called Tunicates, and is believed to also possess direct anticancer activity.
