Repair of articular cartilage is a substantial problem. The patent is useful for entities interested in providing a solution to this problem through the administration of cellular therapy containing adipose-derived stem cells in a biocompatible matrix or delivery system. The patent specifically has 4 independent claims. The first claim covers a composition of matter that is useful for treatment of articular cartilage, the composition comprising of adipose derived stem cells that have been differentiated to have at least one characteristic of a chondrocyte, together with a liquid that is suitable for delivery of the cells. The second claim covers a composition of similar cells, together with a 3-dimensional forming structure that can anchor into the callous bone underneath the articular cartilage. The third covers a method of treatment with the same composition as independent claim 1. The fourth covers a method of treatment with the same composition as independent claim 2. The senior author Jeffrey Gimble is a Scientist at the Stem Cell Laboratory, Louisiana State University Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, his email is GimbleJM@pbrc.edu.
