This patent teaches that if one inhibits the PI3 kinase pathway, it is possible to induce differentiation of pancreatic stem cells into islet-like cells.
PI3k has activity in a variety of stem cells, including hematopoietic stem cells. It will be interesting to see what modification of this enzyme does in other types of stem cells.
