This patent provides systems for expanding hematopoietic stem cells, but culturing of these cells on stromal cells which secrete IL-6, and/or GM-CSF. It is important for the stromal cells to be secreting these compounds since stromal cells possess a wide variety of hematopoietic stimulatory signals, some known and others unknown. The synergy of the stromal signals with IL-6 and/or GM-CSF is used in this invention.
