Lets imagine that one wanted to implant embryonic stem cells into a human. The first concern would be rejection by allogeneic immunity. To overcome this one could immune suppress, which is not desirable, or one could encapsulate the cells. If the cells are encapsulated but start proliferating, then they can either die or break through the encapsulation device. This patent teaches the use of UV light to stop cells from dividing so that they maintain some biological functions and can be implanted in vivo.
