This is another patent on the hematopoietic stem cell. It is filed later than Civin's, that is why this is an interesting patent. Furthermore it actually mention's Civin's patent "U.S. Pat. No. 4,714,680 describes a composition comprising human stem cells. " In any case, this current patent has 3 independent claims. The first covers "A cellular composition comprising human hematopoietic stem cells " which is characterized by expression of the marker Thy-1 and having the ability to self-regenerate and differentiate into cells of the lymphoid and myelomonocytic hematopoietic lineages. The second covers "A cellular composition" that is hematopoietic and characterized by expression of CD34+ but negative for CD10, CD19, and CD33. The third covers "A method for obtaining a cellular composition comprising human hematopoietic stem cells" that has fewer than 100 cells capable of self regeneration in a coculture medium and ability to differentiate into lymphoid and myelomonocytic hematopoietic lineages, the process for obtaining this composition being "separating a mixture of human hematopoietic stem and differentiated cells into a substantially homogeneous fraction" that is made up of CD34+ cells but not cells expressing CD10, CD19, and CD33.
