This invention teaches how to obtain a population of astrocytes that is free of microglial cells from a fresh biopsy specimen. The invention has one independent claim covering the process of explanting a tissue that contains both astrocytes and microglial cells, culturing the cells in vitro under conditions that selectively promote adherence of the astrocytes to the culture vessel, and after about 48 hours removing the glial cells so that all that is left stuck to the vessel is a population of substantially pure astrocytes.
