It has previously been demonstrated that rat hepatic cells can be coaxed into producing insulin by isolating the hepatic cells from an animal that was first primed with a hepatoxin, and subsequently exposing the isolated hepatic cells to high glucose concentrations.
In the current patent a hepatic cell line that has been immortalized, called FERM BP-7498 is patented. The claims are only limited to the cell that has been deposited with ATCC.
