This patent teaches that the chemokines MIP-1 alpha/LD78 are capable of causing the mobilization of stem cells from the bone marrow. This patent is useful for increasing the number of circulating stem cells from a donor so that peripheral blood may be harvested for stem cells for transplantation. Additionally, mobilization may be performed in a patient with a stroke or cardiac infarct so as to cause more stem cells to go to the area of needed.
