Dear ,

A very interesting paper was published last week describing how administration of allogeneic bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells was capable of reducing restenosis in a rat carotid artery injury model. Since allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells are already under clinical development by companies such as Osiris, it will be interesting to see how many other aspects of medicine this stem cell approach will be applicable to.

In the world of patents, a very bizarre patent was issued covering the use of antibodies to MHC I or II for "increasing the number of cells with stem cell markers in a population". This patent, # 7,410,773, could be very useful if the data presented is correct since it essentially teaches that autologous PBMC could be used to generate a large population of CD34 hematopoietic stem cells !!! We hope that this data reproducible.

Another patent, #7,410,797, covers a new stem cell derived from the meninges. This cell appears to be similar to mesenchymal stem cells based on the description. Will be interesting to see whether it can be used allogeneically.

Geron continues building its IP fortress, its recent patent #7,410,798 discloses ways of expanding embryonic stem cells without conditioned media or feeder cells.

Method of preparing an undifferentiated cell

Patent Number: 7,410,773

This patent is either way ahead of its time, or there are some problems in its commercialization.  The patent covers a method of "dedifferentiating" mature cells in order to an immature phenotype or to increase the ability of the cells to act like stem cells.

The first claim of the patent covers a means of...[Read More]

Naples, Italy -

The inherent antiinflammatory activities of mesenchymal stem cells have been leveraged for treatment of diseases associated with uncontrolled production of inflammatory mediators such as graft versus host disease and Crohn's Disease.  Indications for which mesenchymal stem cells are...[Read More]

More about The Stem Cell Meeting

The Stem Cell Meeting, to be held in San Francisco on September 16-17, 2008, is returning for its 3rd year. This conference will examine the up to date most critical scientific, policy and business issues facing stem cell research, medicine and investment. In collaboration with the leaders of the City of San Francisco and the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine, it brings together an international assembly of scientists, clinicians, policymakers and business leaders who share their vision and passion for the life sciences’ most promising field.

This Stem Cell Meeting is the premier international event bringing together world-renowned scientists at the frontier of embryonic and adult stem cell research with decision-makers and thought leaders in policy, ethics, patient advocacy, finance, business, and media to explore the challenge and promise of stem cell research and the compelling potential of emerging therapies.

StemCellPatents.com is proud to be a supporter of the The Stem Cell Meeting.
