Last week the Canadian company Orcrist Bio was issued a patent, #7,446,100, covering the use of stem cell mobilization and immuno-correction after chemotherapy using specific molecular weight fragments of hyaluronic acid.  Given the high-profile management team of the company, combined with this relatively innocuous product, we predict Orcrist will be a potent force in the regenerative medicine area. 

Another patent of interest, #7,445,931, assigned to Bresagen (now Novocell), teaches methods of generating high-purity neuronal precursors from pluripotent stem cells using various ceramides.  There is currently an exponential rise in publications dealing with ceramides controlling signal transduction events, therefore this patent will be interesting to place into context of more recent biological findings. 

Interesting publications last week, Kondo et al describe that adipose regenerative cells (sound familiar?) induce angiogenesis through SDF-1 dependent manner, dependent on endogenous stem cell mobilization.  Also Chang et al reported bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells having some degree of efficacy in a porcine model of diabetes.  Speaking of mesenchymal stem cells, Osiris signed a development deal with Genzyme in which Osiris will commercialize Prochymal and Chondrogen (bone marrow allowgeneic MSC products) in the US and Canada, and Genzyme will commercialize in Rest of World.  Genzyme will make an upfron $130 million payment to Osiris plus milestone and royalties estimated to be >1 billion dollars.
