Your weekly source for the latest stem cell research and stem cell patents.

Hello ,

Last week was a slow one for stem cell patents being issued, so we tried to find the "next closest thing"...

#7,488,719, covers methods of accelerating wound healing through administration of nucleic acids encoding the extracellular matrix molecule perlecan. This could be used with numerous stem cell and stem cell supernatants to achieve synergistic healing/inhibition of fibrosis.

Another patent last week, # 7,488,491, teaches how to use various glycosylceramides for stimulation of local immune responses and as an adjuvant.  Why we included this in StemCellPatents.com is because no one really knows what the "natural ligand" of the NKT cell is, although artificially glycosylceramides activate them.  There was some speculation that the natural ligand is a small molecule that may be isolated from bone marrow and fetal liver, possibly related to Reptimed.

Speaking of the "innate" immune system, a neat paper published last week describes how mesenchymal stem cells inhibit gamma delta T cells in terms of both cytokine production, cytotoxicity, and proliferation.  This finding adds a whole new level of complexity in understanding mesenchymal stem cell immunology.

Bertrand et al. described last week that glioma stem cells are resistant to fas-induced apoptosis because they express monomeric fas, whereas the non-stem cell glioma cells express multimeric fas which is functional.  Perhaps more interesting, the authors describe the physical size of the glioma stem cell as being "small", which reminds us of patents described here in which cells with higher pluripotency have a small size.

Finally, we recommend those of you going to the Stem Cell Summit in NYC tommorow to go to Stemina's talk at 9:11-9:21 given by Dr. Gabriela Cezar.  This company has one of the most exciting technologies we at StemCellPatents.com have seen in a long time.

Wound and cutaneous injury healing with a nucleic acid encoding perlecan

Patent Number: 7,488,719

This patent covers methods of acceleration of wound healing by transfecting cells with nucleic acids encoding the extracellular molecule perlecan.  Perlecan is associated with extracellular matrices in stem cell niches such as the limbic epithelial stem cell compartment (Schlotzer-Schrehardt et al. Characterization of extracellular...[Read More]

Mesenchymal Stem Cells Inhibit Gamma Delta T Cell Proliferation

Tuesday February 10th, 2009 @ 02:10:42 EST

Toulouse, France -

We have previously discussed that mesenchymal stem cells inhibit T cell proliferation, activate suppressor T cells, inhibit homeostatic T cell expansion and can be used as universal donors in some...[Read More]
