Hello ,

G-CSF seems to be getting a lot of attention.  In the previous newsletter we reported a patent, #7,531,510, covering injection of this cytokine for acceleration of post-infarct repair.  This time, we are pleased to report a new paper in which G-CSF administration caused increased spatial learning in rats.  The authors reported a direct anti-apoptotic effect on hippocampal neurons.  Another interesting paper was published last week describing what appears to be transdifferentiation of human cord blood stem cells into hepatocytes in an animal model of liver failure.

In terms of patents, #7,531,505 was issued covering a coating for implants that contains an endothelial progenitor cell binding surface, as well as a surface that binds the implant.  This is an interesting way of preventing restenosis.  PPL Therapeutics was granted a patent, #7,531,715, which claims cloning by double nuclear transfer, an interesting variation on a theme.

Also in terms of patents, the question of gene-patenting reared it's head again with the case of Assn for Medical Pathology et al v. USPTO & Myrian & Directors of the University of Utah Research Foundation (SDNY 2009) in which invalidation of IP surrounding the BRCA gene is sought.

Compositions and methods for promoting attachment of cells of endothelial cell lineage to medical devices

Patent Number: 7,531,505

Lack of proper endothelialization of vascular grafts can cause a variety of problems such as restenosis or thrombosis.  The current patent covers a coating for medical devices in which one side of the coating binds to the metallic surface of the device and the other side contains peptides that bind to endothelium or [Read More]

  G-CSF Makes You Smarter

Saturday May 16th, 2009 @ 00:59:17 EST

Münster, Germany -

G-CSF is widely used as a stem cell mobilizer, inducing complement-dependent exit of CD34 and mesenchymal stem cells from the bone marrow.  It has been postulated that G-CSF has not just hematopoietic but also neurogenic activity.  For example, a study reported that [Read More]
