Hello ,
Last week a paper was published demonstrating ability of stem cells derived from the hair follicle to accelerate healing of damaged nerves. This stem cell population appears to be mesenchymal-like in nature and has the advantage of homing to SDF-1 gradients, thus potentially allowing systemic administration and homing to site of injury.
Jeff Turner's former company, Tissue Regeneration Therapeutics, was issued patent number #7,547,546 covering methods of extracting stem cells from Wharton's Jelly.
Darwin Prockup racked up another great patent, #7,547,545 covering the use of ANY cAMP activator for inducing differentiation of bone marrow stromal cells (mesenchymal stem cells) into neurons.
This patent covers methods of extracting an adherent mesenchymal-like stem cells from the Wharton's Jelly of the umbilical cord. The extracted cells are negative for MHC and are termed by the inventors human umbilical cord perivascular (HUCPV) cells. In the examples section the the cells are demonstrated to be capable of... Sagamihara, Japan - Hair follicle stem cells have previously been demonstrated to possess various characteristics of other stem cells, including migration to SDF-1, thus potentially allowing intravenous injection. Also this stem cell population has been proposed, Ask a question OR leave your comments.
