This is a composition of matter patent covering chemical antagonists of the receptor CXCR-4. This receptor binds to stromal derived factor (SDF-1, otherwise known as CXCL12) and maintains the hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow. When the receptor is antagonized the hematopoietic stem cells mobilize into circulation. This can be used for collecting hematopoietic stem cells for transplantation without needing to drill holes in the bones of donors. Additionally, one may want to antagonize CXCR-4 in order to mobilize stem cells after a heart attack or stroke, so as to allow a more rapid healing of the injured tissue.
