Last week an interesting paper was published describing how serum starvation of mesenchymal stem cells increases IGF-1 production by up to 200-fold.  This may be an easy method of potentiating therapeutic effects of MSC in existing experimental scenarios.  Perhaps more exciting was that the process of starvation was associated with epigenetic changes.

3 patents were issued of interest to our field.

The first one, #7,455,962, teaches how to isolate hemangioblasts by selection for a CD34-like molecule called podocalyxin-like protein 1 (PCLP-1).

The second patent, #7,455,983, covers methods of screening cultures of embryonic stem cells for media that can maintain the embryonic stem cells in an undifferentiated state, while allowing for their propagation.  This is one of the few "methods of screening" patents that we have come across.

The third patent, #7,456,333, discloses a transgenic mouse model of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). This mouse has the leukemia-causing bcr-abl oncogene expressed selectively in cells positive for the stem cell antigen (SCA-1). The model resembles human CML pathology.  Too bad these sorts of patents cant be issued in Canada.

Patent Number: 7,455,962

Therapeutic angiogenesis offers the possibility of treating a variety of diseases associated with ischemia.  For example, autologous bone marrow stem cells were used at Indiana University for the treatment of critical limb ischemia patients.  Although several studies have used various [Read More]

New Orleans, Louisiana -

We at StemCellPatents.com have been stating for a while now that one of the future areas of our field will be not simply determining if stem cell therapies work, but how to optimize them.  For example, bone marrow derived MSC are already in Phase III clinical trials, and numerous...[Read More]
