Readers of ours may remember the discussion we had on the Wake Forest finding regarding amniotic stem cells. In a recent paper (Rehni et al. Amniotic fluid derived stem cells ameliorate focal cerebral ischaemia-reperfusion injury induced behavioural deficits in mice. Behav Brain Res. 2007 May 26) the utility of these cells was compared to embryonic derived neural stem cells.
The investigators used the MCA model of cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury.
Administration of amniotic fluid derived stem cells AND embryonic neuronal stem cells were approximately equally effective at reversing the neurological deficits induced in this stroke model.
