Dear manoj kumar valluru,

Last week Medistem published a paper demonstrating efficacy of their menstrual blood derived stem cells, called Endometrial Regenerative Cells, in an animal model of critical limb ischemia. Given that Medistem's cells appear to be the same population in the endometrium that causes angiogenesis on a monthly basis, this therapeutic indication would make sense !! Another interesting publication was the report that Toll Like Receptors may be implicated in mobilization of stem cells in kidney failure.

A very powerful and important patent (#7,413,734) was issued last week to Ethicon covering the use of adherent cord blood derived stem cells for treatment of retinitis pigmentosa. This is cord blood stem cells being used allogeneically without prior myeloablation...a very important step for the general use of cord blood derived products in regenerative medicine.

Geron was issued 2 patents covering embryonic stem cell culture (#7,413,902) and genetic manipulation (#7,413,904). Speaking of culturing embryonic stem cells, the Australian company ES Cell International was issued a patent (#7,413,903) on maintaining embryonic stem cells in an undifferentiated state by agonizing lysophospholipid G-protein coupled receptors...these are the receptors for compounds like sphingosine-1-phosphate and lysophosphatidic acid, which have various immune modulatory properties in vivo.

A great patent (#7,413,897) covering an early type of hepatic stem cell was also issued. This would be a great one not only for cell therapists but also for makers of extracorporeal artificial liver devices.

Patent Number: 7,413,734

Classically cord blood transplantation is used for the treatment of hematological disorders in which the recipient hematopoietic stem cell compartment is ablated (by chemotherapy and/or radiation) and the donor cord blood cells are used for hematopoietic rescue.  However the use of cord blood in the area of regenerative medicine...[Read More]
