The San Diego company Novocell Inc issued a press release announcing granting of a "seminal stem cell patent".  Reading of this patent (#7,510,876) shocked us.  It contains perhaps one of the broadest claim sets we have seen here at StemCellPatents.com.  In essence it appears to cover "an in vitro culture of definitive endoderm".  This one is a must-read !  Congratulations Novocell !!

Angiogenesis for therapeutic purposes is a hot topic these days, with various companies such as Cardium, Medistem, and CVBT in various stages of clinical development.  Recently Novartis was issued patent #7,511,019 covering administration of FGF-4 for treatment of ischemic heart disease.

A new way of purifying hematopoietic stem cells was disclosed in patent #7,510,877 involving selecting for the CD150+, CD48-, and CD244- fraction of hematopoietic tissue.

Stem cell expansion without differentiation through the use of STAT3 protein transduced cells was covered in patent #7,510,870.  This technique is promising but issues regarding leukemogenesis may arise.
