Hello manoj kumar valluru,

An interesting week in terms of new ways of stimulating hematopoietic stem cells.  Patent #7,442,390 issued covering the use of specific populations of mesenchymal-like cells for augmenting hematopoietic stem cell engraftment, whereas patent # 7,442,394 also issued, teaching the use of blueberries and other natural products in the development of a composition that activates "stem cells".  Yet again this week, Jamie Thomson was awarded another patent (#7,442,548), this time for an expansion of previous work, essentially showing that various supplements can be added to serum-free media to allow embryonic stem cell expansion without differentiation.

Neat paper was also published last week, first time demonstration of CTLA-4 blockade in post hematopoietic stem cell transplant relapse patients.  Although it was a dose-finding study, 3 patients underwent objective disease response with a one-injection protocol.  The ability to stimulate immune suppression through inhibition of an inhibitor was previously discussed in the write-up we did on removal of cancer-secreted exosomes.

Patent Number: 7,442,390

Stem cell transplantation in the form of cord blood, mobilized peripheral blood, or bone marrow, has saved many lives.  One of the limiting factors of this procedure is graft versus host disease (GVHD).  The other is poor...[Read More]

  CTLA-4 Inhibition in Hematological Malignancies

Monday November 3rd, 2008 @ 03:13:04 EST

The stimulation of immunity against cancer has been demonstrated to some extent in conditions of hematopoietic malignancies.  For example, CML patients who are recipients of allogeneic stem cell grafts, after relapse, can be induced into remission by administration of donor specific lymphocytes[Read More]
