Valproic acid is a clinically used anti-convulsant administered for bipolar disorder and epilepsy. It also
expands stem cells in vitro. In a recent paper (Lee et al. Inhibition of Histone Deacetylase on Ventricular Remodeling in Infarcted Rats. Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol. 2007 Mar 30) it was demonstrated that...

Dogma in the world of hematologists/oncologists says you can't transplant cord blood across allogeneic barriers without the use of immune suppression. This video explains why that dogma may be wrong.

The use of stem cells for induction of antiinflammatory response in chronic conditions is feasible at face value. However, the possibility of harnessing antiinflammatory activities of stem cells in acute situations is very intriguing.
In a recent study (Chen et al. Human umbilical cord blood-derived CD34+ cells cause attenuation of multiorgan dysfunction during experimental...

Although liver failure is treated on an experimental basis with the use of bone marrow stem cells, not too many people are aware of the preclinical evidence supporting such an approach. The video describes the use of bone marrow stem cells, as well as cord blood stem cells, for the differentiation into hepatic-like cells after administration into recipients with carbon...

The fact that mesenchymal stem cells are useful not only for regeneration of tissue, but also for blocking pathological immune responses is the subject of this video. The immune modulatory properties of mesenchymal stem cells allows them to be used for diseases such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, lupus, and other autoimmune conditions.

There are currently many clinical trials using bone marrow stem cells for regeneration of cardiac muscle. However, many scientists love to argue whether the bone marrow is actually differentiating into heart tissue, or if the bone marrow is simply providing "trophic" support. This video tries to discuss some of these issues.

This video describes the use of Schwann cell precursors to induce remyelination. Presented is a neat model of demyelination and specifics about how to use it to evaluate regenerative stem cell populations. This approach is useful for developing therapeutics for treatment of diseases such as multiple sclerosis.

This video overviews a paper describing the ability of valproic acid (a clinically used drug for treatment of neurological disorders) to induce expansion of hematopoietic stem cells. It will be interesting to see if valproic acid can also induce expansion of other types of stem cells in vivo.

Immortalized stem cell lines are great tools for drug discovery in that they can be used for screening of chemical libraries for compounds that induce either self renewal or differentiation along a specific lineage. Therapeutically, despite oncogenic potential, differentiated stem cell lines have been used in
clinical... Monday June 11th, 2007 @ 23:45:40 EST
